This illustration is based on a movement to save the few remaining butterfly sculptures that once towered above Riverfront Park during Spokane’s 1974 World’s Fair. Originally there were five color-coded butterflies to help visitors navigate their way around the Expo ’74 campus.
The citizens of Spokane were able to convince city administrators to save one of the several that originally stood. At the north entrance to the park there now stands a beautifully restored lilac butterfly.
